Off Triennale

The OFF TRIENNALE is looking for outstanding work from emerging and established artists working in the medium of photography reflecting upon the theme Breaking Point. Searching for change. Artist collectives are encouraged to submit projects as well. The participating artists will present their work in solo-shows at selected Off-locations throughout the city of Hamburg. more

A breaking point is the moment of greatest strain at which someone or something gives way. In world-history these moments seem obvious but were they at the time? We face increased global challenges: climate change; the humanitarian crisis of migrants coming to Europe; cyber-attacks; terrorism; Trump. Is this our breaking point? ENTER will examine this question and explore concepts around these socio-political, economic and environmental concerns. ENTER is a humanist call to arms - an invitation to act.
Is it time to drop inherited habits and instead to look to the future? This is an open call to submit artwork relating to our theme “breaking point”. We welcome projects from photographers, filmmakers, writers and musicians. The final selection will be made by an independent jury and curated and presented in public spaces during the Triennial. A series of talks and screenings will run alongside the exhibition.

What winners will receive:

Selected artists will be part of the main exhibition program at the 7th Triennial of Photography Hamburg in 2018. Their works will be displayed in a public space, curated by Emma Bowkett and Krzysztof Candrowicz.

Since 1999, the Triennial of Photography has taken place every three years in Hamburg in collaboration with the city’s major museums, cultural institutions, galleries, and other organizers. Meanwhile, the festival has become an important event throughout Germany and internationally. With a large number of exhibitions under a common theme, it highlights current topics in photography. The festival features conversations with artists, thematic discussions, lectures, portfolio viewings, and an international conference.

The Triennial of Photography originated as an initiative of the photographer and collector F. C. Gundlach. Since 2014, the event has been organized by Deichtorhallen Hamburg GmbH.

The theme of the 7th Triennial of Photography in 2018 will be BREAKING POINT. SEARCHING FOR CHANGE

Krzysztof Candrowicz will serve as artistic director of the upcoming Triennial of Photography for a second time after the festival in 2015.
